Bluebird Facts
- Bluebirds are the first songbirds to arrive in spring.
- Because bluebirds are not strong enough to make holes inside of trees to build their nests, they rely on finding abandoned woodpecker nests in which to build. Nest boxes greatly assis in aiding them bluebirds in nest building.
- Bluebirds often have two broods in a season. Sometimes, a young bluebird from the first brood will remain in the nest and assist its parents in caring for the second brood.
- Bluebirds are insectivores and they will eat worms, insects, small spiders, grasshoppers, and crickets. When insects are not available, bluebirds will eat vegetation such as poison ivy, mistletoe, pokeweed, and berry bushes.
